The 5 Parents You’ll Meet at Blah Blah and Other Listicles That Make You Want to Burn Your ‘Mom Card’

Rose

I know what you’re thinking. Not another one of those inverse misogynist ‘Mummy blogger’ posts, where the writer decants their hatred for women into handy bite size categories that their fellow bitch can nod their head to. Ask yourself, when was the last time you saw one of those posts written by a Dad, for his fellow man? Nah, didn’t think so. You know the sort, that categorise parents (but mostly Mothers) in a handy list style format. Often masquerading as some sort of self depreciating humour, they describe other mothers more often than not, by their appearance like 1) The Fun Parent, 2) The Career Mom, 3) The Haggered One etc.

Nope, I loathe those posts with every fibre of my being. I am a woman, who happens to also be a Mother, amongst many other different things within my life. But being a Mother does not define me. I refuse to go from being someones daughter, to being someones wife to becoming a Mother with no identity of my own. Trust me on this one, I’ve had first hand experience from my own martyr of a mother, your children will not thank you for it.

I’m a writer, ergo I love to read, especially other blogs and I’ve come across some that I still visit daily, years after finding them. My favourites are clever, witty, original and written by strong intelligent women. I read them when feeling like the only person awake in the world whilst feeding my son. And they kept me company when I was a stay at home Mom trying to hang on to the loose threads of my sanity. My favourites were, and still are not always about empowering women, granted, but they do not seek to tear their sisters down. These listicles perpetuate false ideals, they compartmentalise women and pit them against each other.
